Clearly Shakespeare was on to something when he asked, “What’s in a name?” Take Les Petites, the Parisian brand founded in 1992 by Isabelle Benichou (top right). The name of the label is simply derived from the fact that Benichou was “la petite” in her family (the youngest of seven kids), and not from a specialisation in smaller sizes (hehe). The only thing possibly petite about Les Petites, in the fashion sense, in the designer’s own words, is this: “Everyone has a young side to them, one that only comes out sometimes and that is playful and carefree.”
Sublimely cut with easy angel sleeves & an injection of French chic, the Les Petites ‘Muse’ dress is a piece that appeals to every woman -- youngest or not :-)

Love her or hate her, when it comes to a fashion plate, Victoria Beckham takes the cake. Consistently dressed to the nines, this prominent WAG certainly pushes the envelope when it comes to fashion-forwardness. Thankfully, VB's sometimes over-the-top style didn’t transfer over into her design decisions when she decided to launch her own line of jeans.
VB’s first jeans collection did make quite a splash -- until her relationship with maker Rock & Republic soured.
The name '1921 Jeans' then appeared in the news -- after VB took a couple of days off from the Germany World Cup to visit the company's headquarters in Winnipeg, Canada.
Western Glove Works, the maker of 1921 Jeans, is one of the oldest family-owned denim manufacturers in the North America. With a collection inspired by jeans from around the turn of the century (we assume they mean 1900 & not 2000), 1921 Jeans already enjoys its own significant reputation & popularity. What resulted from the meeting with VB was a signature star dVb jeans range that blended her unique fashion direction with 1921 Jeans' technical know-how. Rather than one single element, the product born of this collaboration possesses a variety of aspects that make it unique as a total. Kinda like a "sum of all parts": great fit, cool washes, interesting details, quality fabrics that feel wonderful, & styling that is appropriate to that one-and-only "VB look".

Y-3 Five-Pocket Jeans (Men & Women)

As you have undoubtedly heard, the great Yohji Yamamoto, Japan's elegant king of noir & the creator of Adidas' Y-3 label, was in a bit of financial bind last October -- but all is not lost. Even before the storm hit, Adidas had committed to a five-year deal for the production & global distribution of Y-3 bags, luggage & leather goods (available Spring 2010) by US luggage specialist Samsonite. Yamamoto's own Y-3 contract with Adidas was also renewed until 2015. And with a white knight (in the form of Japanese investment firm Integral Corporation) already miraculously putting together the money to rescue his company, things are starting to look like roses again for the design genius. All the good tidings obviously put Yamamoto in a buoyant mood. As a surprise finale for his SS2010 Y-3 show, Yamamoto pulled French soccer legend Zinedine Zidane from the front row for a little penalty shoot-out practice on the runway. As the crowd went wild & a lucky photographer played goalie, Yamamoto & Zidane both successfully converted their penalties -- making for the most memorable fashion finale of the season.

TWENTY8TWELVE (by Sienna & Savannah Miller) Leggings

Sometimes it's tough to decide between jeans & tights. Consider the dilemma solved with these jeggings (jeans + leggings) from Twenty8Twelve. The Miller sisters have again struck the right cord for their fans with these cool drain-pipes. Much has been said about the charms of vintage, & for Pinceau it was the spark of an idea.
Owned by Jun Co. Ltd, which is, as you may know, one of the most dynamic & creative fashion forces in Japan, Pinceau was created as a slightly more adult version of Adam et Ropé -- another one of Jun fashion group’s acclaimed select store chain cum private label (sort of like the smaller-scale version of Anthropologie or Fred Segal).
With a name that means "paintbrush" in French, Pinceau's mission is to help discerning grown-up gals "paint their own colours onto their own canvases". This label really knows how to combine the perfect blend of vintage & modern, introducing fashion elements that are old but good to a new audience.
Drawing inspiration from the vintage sophistication of the great Chanel Numéro Cinq (No.5), this chic little parfum sequin tee from Pinceau's sell-out "5 Couture" series is a wonderful addition to any woman's wardrobe. The ideal piece to go under a jacket for the office, or to be worn simply with jeans during the weekend.

YMC (You Must Create) Selvage Jeans

When asked how he saw the future of design, Raymond Loewy, pioneer of American Industrial Design reasoned that "you must create your own design style". It is this philosophy that provided Fraser Moss & Jimmy Collins with the principle to launch YMC (You Must Create).
Taking inspiration from the early 20th Century ("simple & made to last"), this mainly-menswear London label has certainly lived up to its name. As opposed to most 'skate'-inspired American street fashion, YMC's founder-designers take pride in finding inspiration from a variety of British elements: 70s punk subculture, workwear style, even the coarse landscape around the British isles. With its new modern interpretation of underground driven trends, YMC has for a decade & a half now brought an independent, slightly leftfield way of dressing with a multitude of different looks.
These YMC red selvage raw indigo jeans are unbranded & come in a slim, carrot leg fit. (Great price for selvage denim, too!)

ALICE + OLIVIA One-Shoulder Sequin Dress

If ever there was a time to wear sequins, it is now. Sequins are the latest rage to flash over the world of celeb-dom, & they seem to be channeling the award season glitz of a radiant Tinseltown mixed with the blazing luminosity of a hopeful New Year.
The great thing about this piece by Alice + Olivia, apart from the sexy single-shoulderness (not only an enduring trend but also completely alluring), is that the outfit is almost like built-in jewellery, so that accessories aren't really even needed. The only accessories you should wear are a pair of vertiginous heels!

KSUBI Eyewear

Sunglasses are like jeans & shoes -- meaning you can never have too many (haha)! Here’s another shades line you must have at this moment: Ksubi.
Founded in 2000 by a collective comprising of rag-tag Aussie surfers, Ksubi quickly grew into Down Under's favourite jeans/streetwear company. Apart from a slight hiccup due to alleged trademark infringement (you can read about it here: "Tsubo sues Tsubi, and Ksubi is born"), the re-christened label has gone from strength to strength. Today Ksubi does more than just ultra-hip denim, making also unisex eyewear that transfers the brand's signature style -- fresh, artistic, with a healthy dose of attitude & humour -- onto your peepers.
The first letter in both 'Ksubi' (as well as its earlier name 'Tsubi') has always been silent, so that 'Ksubi' is pronounced as "soobie" in Australian accents, & "suebee" in the USA.

The brand's eccentric ad campaign (09/10) seems to suggest that no matter what you carry on your head or wear as clothing, Ksubi sunglasses will be the first thing others notice about you.

Some of their designs may be non-traditional looking, but Ksubi eyewear is already quite a cult classic & enjoys a niche following.
