Colours: Emerald Multi (left) & Strawberry Multi (right).
Did you know that shutter shades have been around since the 80’s? Rap superstar & trendsetter Kanye West brought them back into style in his MTV for “Stronger.” These unique, unforgettable sunglasses are in high demand everywhere. You could wear them on a fun outing or indoors (like to a club). Plus they’re so affordable -- really a painless drop in the bucket to step up your fashion style.

Prada started a striking look using ombre tie-dye at the AW2007 shows, many designers then followed suit in SS2008 with more muted, subtly done tie-dye that’s both distinctive & elegant at the same time. This short parachute dress & sleeveless top from 3.1 Phillip Lim take on an illuminating glow with the help of ethereal, watercolour tie-dye printed silk. Characterised by an individual look, these simply-cut, easy-to-wear pieces will add a touch of demure cool to your summer ensemble & help you update your wardrobe to sustain the heat.

Hurry over, before the secret is out... With legions of fans from Hollywood, it's hard to believe that Sheri Bodell is still one of fashion’s best kept secrets in these parts. Now LA-based, Bodell started out as a shop girl in high school & had spells in dancing, buying, merchandising & designing before fulfilling her dream of creating her own label. Today her upscale collection -- sleek, wearable, with a seductive rock-inspired look & intricate workmanship hard to find in ready-to-wear -- wows not only her devoted celeb clientele but also the editors, critics & industry buyers. These Sheri Bodell pieces have a very delicate feel, matched with a tasteful display of studs. Not for the wallflower, so get ready for attention!
Shorts have emerged as the official no-brainer for this season & 3.1 Phillip Lim adds a sophisticated twist to this simple summer staple with pleats & a slightly high-waisted cut. The fitted yet relaxed shape also makes these very easy to dress up or down. You’ll love them with flats & a crisp oxford. Rather wonderfully, it’s officially OK too to wear your city shorts with heels!
Happy pre-Father's Day! Father's Day is really an easy holiday to have success -- dad always seems to be happy with just about anything you give him! This year, why not give a gift that doesn’t look like everything he already owns? Skip the safe white shirt (not that we don’t have those!), come on by the stores for stuff that are a bit more imaginative & still tasteful. Happy Father’s Day to all who are fathers :)
This cool as a cucumber3.1 Phillip Lim jersey tank dress is just the thing to wear when the mercury rises as high as the elephant’s eye. A nice balance of sporty comfort & unfussy sophistication, the style would be equally at home on its own, with oversized sunglasses or gladiator sandals, or dressed up under a jacket for smart-casual. The interesting drawstring detail on the back allows you to fit your curves perfectly, too. Colours: Crispy white will go with just about anything, or opt for peachy pink if you prefer a little warmth.
As we’d posted before, in Japan, Sanyo Shokai holds the licence for all Burberry apparel brands & stores. In 2000, following the raving success of Burberry Blue Label (geared towards young women with some men’s items), Sanyo decided that girls shouldn’t have all the fun & spun off Burberry Black Label for male professionals. Designed in Japan in collaboration with Burberry’s London team (which retains approval authority over all concepts), both lines have reinvigorated the once-tired brand with a Japonistic styling. Many fashion-forward tourists even regard them as one of the hidden treasures of Japan (since they’re only sold in Japan). Woven of premium fabric that feels wonderful & smartly cut for a nice fit & appearance, these hard-to-come by Burberry Black Label knit polos also feature a banded hem -- just plain more comfortable for those of us who aren’t big on tucked-in shirts. A stylish, durable style to show off your beach/golf tan! [Colours: Navy, White, Vermillion, Black. Retail price in Japan = ¥12,600]
Being in the vanguard of fashion is concomitant to risk-taking &Cop. Copine does it good. We don’t see the Parisian line much around these parts, but Cop. Copine (under founder-designer Leon Nedelian) has been quietly creative & prolific for over 20 years now. (Back in the earlier days the label was called Copain Copine, French for ‘boyfriend girlfriend.’) Innovative fabrics/textures,asymmetrical shapes& unusual embellishment techniques are compelling forces behind each Cop. Copine garment that have sustained the enthusiasm of fans around the globe. If you enjoy exploring dynamic, idiosyncratic styles, this monochrome (one of this season’s main trends) tunic/one-piece with a stylish cut & relaxed ease will give your look an interesting visual flair without overdoing the funky element. Team it with metallic jewellery, patent heels, or leggings/jeans for varied looks.
Whilst the weather is proving infuriatingly capricious, you can rely on these latest arrivals from Development by Erica Davies for a little wardrobe boost. Need something dressy for a special occasion? The beautiful off-shoulder classic A-line that flatters all body types make the bright pink Cameron dress (left pic) a smashing winner. Want something more casual? Instantly lift your mood in the mustard colour double layer tank dress (right pic) with a contrast draped button front panel. This piece would look great too contrasted against a black cardi/jacket. The best thing (in addition to the striking hues & utterly wearable silhouettes) about these dresses? You can wear them one day as a dress; the next, as a top with your favourite jeans.
Happy Mother’s Day. Just wanted to add our voice to the chorus of well-wishers. This year is the 100th anniversary of what is widely known as the first Mother’s Day. The challenges of motherhood have multiplied; yet, mums remain the glue that holds so many families together. If you need a little inspiration (be it to pamper the chic mum, salute the stay-at-home mum, or honour the new mum), do stop by the shops as we might just have that wonderful & cool gift for the amazing mum(s) in your life. Happy Mother’s Day to all of you who believe in your kids & nurture their positive dreams. Enjoy the day in style!
Have a happy & safe Labour Day! Meanwhile hardworking us will remain open through 1 May (1145-2000hrs) for folks who need relief from fashion distress. Those of you who, for whatever reason, are not out frolicking at the beach or on vacation outside Klang Valley/the country, we welcome you :)
After succeeding Phillip Lim as the creative force behind Development, Welsh designer Erica Davies has successfully cultivated her own loyal following with sharp, structured designs that are infused with a girlish quality as well as her unique British-LA aesthetics. This winning formula of ‘hard meets soft’ has firmly established Davies as a designer of beautiful clothes that have staying power. Her specialty is ultra-chic one-pieces that transcend from day to night, like this classy-edgymini dress. This piece would look amazing paired with platform heels or chunky bracelets. If you (like some of us!) are shy about baring that much leg, throw on some coloured tights or leggings, or simply wear it as a top over stovepipe denim.
After starting out with Ungaro, Féraud & Et Vous, & later head-designing for Diane von Fürstenberg, French-born Manhattanite Catherine Malandrino launched her own label in 1998. Merging French romance with American energy, & never being shy about the importance of ‘seduction’ in her designs, Malandrino brought softness & refinement to the urban female wardrobe & soon gained a glamourous list of celebrity clients. In 2002, “Sex and the City” filmed in her SoHo boutique & Malandrino became the name on every fashion follower’s lips. The designer further acquired a mass appeal following her 2006 appearance as guest judge on “Project Runway.” Today, go to any Hollywood red carpet or turn on “Gossip Girl” & chances are you’ll find at least one, if not two or three, actresses sporting a Catherine Malandrino frock. If all this doesn’t impress you, we promise her clothes will! In the loveliest of blue-green, this exquisite top carries lavish cut-out details & can be easily taken from a day at the office to a night on the town.

The little black dress with a modern twist from Mint Jodi Arnold. Elegant embroidery & hand-beading on the bodice evoke a romantic, vintage feel that represents the beauty of the past. The slightly raised-waist silhouette skims your figure & doesn’t cling; the feminine silk-organza sleeves add a soft & sheer accent. Lovely for all special occasions -- cocktail parties, weddings, or even the college prom if you have one to go to :) Also available in white.
The Helmut Lang brand was created by Austrian designer Helmut Lang in 1986. With his serious, intelligent & inspirational designs, Lang reigned supreme over the ’90s fashion world. In 1999 Lang entered into partnership with Prada. It was not a lasting union. After Lang left in 2005, Prada sold the trademark to Link Theory Holdings, a Japanese company that also owns the Theory label. American-New Zealand designer couple Michael & Nicole Colovos (the founders of Habitual) were hired on the recommendation of Vogue editors. The pair announced that they were so respectful of Lang’s revered legacy, they had no intention of recreating his work. Instead, the new team has won encouraging reviews by making Lang's utilitarian roots more accessible, both aesthetically & financially, to the general public. Minimalism for the masses, so to speak. The revived Helmut Lang collection maintains the clean, linear lines of the original, but loses the harsh, severe aspects. Featuring a back centre seam that provides the sort of subtle detail that serves as a Helmut Lang hallmark, this stretch cotton poplin dress-shirt is an apt example of the continued albeit altered spirit of the brand. In white or black. Smooth finish, slim fit. Coming soon!
This sweet, form-flattering silk-linen cami/tank by Mint Jodi Arnold is such an eye-catching & versatile top. It can be worn alone, or under a cute cardigan. Through the intricate sewn/stitched detailing on the bodice, designer Jodi Arnold again demonstrates her special attraction to vintage-inspired techniques. Perfect for the warmest days & nights.
