Renowned for his innovative use of materials and progressive attitude to new technology, Hussein Chalayan is one of fashion’s most experimental designers. With transformation ever his theme, Chalayan’s best-known designs include paper dresses that can be folded into envelopes, a coffee table-turned-wooden skirt, and dresses that mechanically morphed through a century of silhouettes. Conceptual he may be, Chalayan is also commercial. In 2011, he not only announced that he was shortening his label’s name from Hussein Chalayan to just Chalayan, he also created the wearable diffusion collection Grey Line. As creative director of sportswear label Puma, he additionally does an co-branded line of contemporary men’s and women’s wear.

The designer shares his thoughts on London in a 2009 interview for a Design Museum Series:-
