RACHEL ROY
Rachel Roy was born in California to an Indian father and a Dutch mother. When a 14-year old Roy couldn’t afford to buy the clothes she liked, her mother encouraged her to become a stock girl at a Contempo Casuals boutique (a mainstay in malls across America in the ’80s). Roy has worked in the fashion industry ever since. After graduation Roy moved to New York where she became a stylist. She then spent 6 years at Rocawear, working her way up from intern to creative director (and marrying former Rocawear CEO Damon Dash -- they’re now divorced), before launching her eponymous label in 2005.
“I design for women who are on the run from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., with no time to change in between”, is how the designer describes her highly successful line of sophisticated, bright separates and elegant dresses.
